Oxidation of Ferrous Sulfate by Growing Cultures of Thiobacillus Ferrooxidans
Oxidation of ferrous iron in acid solutions is an important reaction producing soluble ferric iron. The oxidizing property makes the ferric ion one of the most useful reagents in hydrometallurgy. The ferrous iron oxidation kinetics of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans growing in batch culture was examined. T. ferrooxidans oxidized ferrous iron at pH 1.5 in the presence of oxygen and utilized carbon dio...
متن کاملFerrous Iron Oxidation by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans: Inhibition with Benzoic Acid, Sorbic Acid, and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate.
Benzoic acid, sorbic acid, and sodium lauryl sulfate at low concentrations (5 to 10 mg/liter) each effectively inhibited bacterial oxidation of ferrous iron in batch cultures of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The rate of chemical oxidation of ferrous iron in low-pH, sterile batch reactors was not substantially affected at the tested concentrations (5 to 50 mg/liter) of any of the compounds.

Introduction: There is a growing interest in the study of sulfate minerals on the surface of Mars, supported by the discovery of jarosite at Meridiani Planum [1-3]. There is also the possibility of finding hydrous sulfate minerals in the permafrost, located at the polar regions. Sulfate minerals often precipitate in a variety of hydration states in the presence of liquid water. The spectra of s...
متن کاملInhibition of citrate oxidation by glyoxylate in rat-liver homogenates.
Glyoxylic acid is known to inhibit the oxygen uptake of various respiring-tissue suspensions. The cause of this inhibition was attributed by Kleinzeller (1943) to a specific inhibition of the decarboxylative reactions, as it appeared in his experiments that the inhibition of decarboxylation of pyruvate by macerated yeast juice, and other tissue suspensions, increased with increasing concentrati...
متن کاملInhibition of viral replication by nitric oxide and its reversal by ferrous sulfate and tricarboxylic acid cycle metabolites
IFN-gamma-induced nitric oxide (NO) in the murine macrophage-derived cell line RAW 264.7 was previously shown to inhibit replication of the poxviruses ectromelia and vaccinia (VV) and HSV-1. In the current study we demonstrate that murine macrophages activated as a consequence of VV infection express inducible nitric oxide synthase. These activated macrophages were resistant to infection with V...
